No. that’s not it at all.

A Canadian Border Guard was shot today. Around 2 pm, I heard a story on the radio. I thought at first it was maybe someone trying to get across the border illegally, I don’t know, maybe someone angry about having to pay duty–but then I heard that the victim was a woman, and that the attacker then shot himself.

“This highlights the dangers that Canadian Border Services Employees face every day” said a somber official for the CBS.

No it doesn’t.

It highlights the dangers that women face every day. Especially women who are in relationships with men.

Which is pretty much all of us.

I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that the guy who shot that woman was her current or ex lover or husband. Maybe a pissed-off co-worker, former boss, or subordinate of hers.

they always do this, the news people and official spokespeople. They always try to tell us that an attack motivated by sexism is NOT THAT AT ALL. It was the individual act of an unhinged person. It was a ‘crime of passion’. Oh, maybe it was violence against women, but it was cultural.

Sure, yea. Patriarchal culture.

the shooters’ gun was aimed at a Canadian border guard, not a woman. He might just as easily have driven up to a booth staffed by a man.

sure. but he didn’t, because he was aiming for her.

In the hours and days to come, we’ll learn the truth. Maybe they were married. Maybe the news people will say, it was ‘domestic abuse’ — or ‘spousal assault’ . Stalking. Some other tepid vague phrase that disappears the fact of men’s hate crimes against women.

We’re not falling for it.

Save the date:

About easilyriled

My mom was Edith, my dad was John. I have a brother, who is Shawn. I have many friends and allies and mentors in my life. I'm white, over-educated, working in a field for which I am not yet trained, messy, funny, smart, lesbian, feminist "Not the fun kind", as Andrea Dworkin said. But I, like the feminists I hang with, ARE fun. Radical feminism will be the roots of our shared liberation. Rejection of sex-stereotypes (gender) and male domination will give us wings.

  1. Yes, exactly. And with the young girl Amanda who suicided: it was bullying, eventually, but first and foremost it was sexual exploitation. The left would have looked the other way, choosy choice, agency and empowerment. Until she suicided, did the YouTube, all the Facebook comments. Then everyone on the bandwagon for the latest “initiative”, important experts, pundits, concern trolls, writers, facilitators, principals, teachers, politicians. We must have programs against BULLING, and don’t forget, boys get bullied too. Media careful to give one girl, one boy examples. Except girls are the targets of sexual exploitation, boys the exploiters. Careful to detour around that one.

  2. Certainly, the situation does not sound the way it has been reported, because of his subsequent suicide. The ex-partner theory fits like a glove.

So keep us informed if any further information comes to hand.

Oh, and one report I read:
“This event is a sobering reminder of the dangerous conditions faced daily by the men and women of our law enforcement agencies.”

It was a female officer that was shot in this incident, yet ‘women’ still get second mention as some sort of token afterthought?

  3. Wow. Thanks for that.

  4. Patriarchal reversal again and as usual malestream’s enactment of ‘equality’ wherein if it happens to women then obviously men too are commonly subjected to same violence. Missing is the gendered perspective namely male violence against women is not symmetrical but asymmetrical. Meaning girls and women are overwhelmingly subjected to male violence and all too commonly, lethal male violence because they are females. Males however are not subjected to male violence because they are male. It’s that something out there which can’t be named because it just exists and that is why women and men in equal numbers are victims of that unknowable/unnameable thing! Male Supremacist System doesn’t exist because we are all individuals. The male oppressors become the oppressed according to men.

Just another isolated incident!! Sigh mens’ war against women is always denied by men and their malestream propaganda media tool.

  5. The CBC is now reporting that they have conflicting reports of what happened – that the man was trying to shoot himself and her getting shot was a “stray bullet” from that. This is really strange. Why would he kill himself after crossing the border, in front of the female border guard? Why do it in front of her, if that’s what really happened? There’s definitely more to this.

  6. I live in Seattle.I heard this morning at 5am on KOMO news radio that they interviewed a witness who was driving directly behind the shooter’s vehicle.Guy said shooter was suspicious because he kept changing lanes as they approached the border-including the shooter actually got out of his van to confirm where the female officer was and when she moved to a new booth, shooter made a point of pulling over into the lane for that booth.
That right there set off warning bells for me.Planned and he knew her.

  7. Thursday and Friday I read different articles on this in the Seattle Times. They never even mentioned the KOMO interview even to say it was false or the guy wasn’t really a witness.Silence on it.Friday’s article did mention that he shot her first before shooting himself, contradicting the story that she was hit by the bullet he used to kill himself. Two shots fired.Nothing at all about whether he knew her beforehand.Could have just been ANY woman he wanted to kill.Fits with his making sure he was in the lane for the booth she ended up at.

  8. trust your perceptions

“…the individual act of an unhinged person.” Yes. No systematic paradigm at all here. Move along.
